Thanks for checking out our site.  As the Authors of  The Online Backup Guru, Web Marketers and Web Developers, we know backing up your computer can be a daunting and overwhelming task, but you know you need to do it.  CD’s, external drives, USB flash drives; you end up loosing track of your stuff.  Where’s the latest version?  Well what happens if the hardware gets ruined in a fire or flood, so now you need offsite backup. We know we have been there.  Data online backups make this task much easier, and are a great compliment to hardware and software backup solutions.  Question is with so many available and others coming online almost daily which internet backup service do you choose?  Are they secure? Which one is best for the types of data and files that I need to backup?

Our Computer Backup Plan – Works for Us

Jeez where do we start.  Being in and around the development business for 15 years, we lost enough of my work enough times that we vowed to never let it happen again.  So backing up my computers has become like changing the oil on my car (routine).  Piece meal works fine.  Local hardware backup is the first line of defense. Our basic documents, videos, pictures, music, websites and old code go to a shared terabyte external hard drive and then to an online backup service. Important files that we may need quickly (and security files like passwords) or share end up on USB Flash Drives which we store in a secure place .  The hardware method of backup works fine, but we never really felt comfortable with my backup plan until we added online backup.  Like others we do share this over multiple online services, where we put some stuff with one service and some with another. We use a syncing service (SugarSync which has a Mac Client and iPhone access) for document folders and code folders (files that get changed frequently) for constant instant backup, and scheduled backup services for my bigger static stuff like videos, music and pictures (iDrive, Mozy, Carbonite). We have tested restore from these remote backup services (although not a quick way to restore they all restored successfully), so finally we feel like we can rest without worry of data loss.  Hope this helps.

Now we suggest you review your hardware and data and take the time to create a computer backup plan for yourself, and review and educate yourself on the best backup techniques, hardware, software and online backup solutions for safely storing your most precious asset.

Final words of advice. “Backing up your computer should be like changing the oil on your car”.
