Unlike MyOtherDrive but like Carbonite and Mozy, the KineticD™ (Data Deposit Box) services do requires you to download and run a small software client on the machines you want to protect or access. The installer requires your username and password, which makes sense, considering the company’s claims that only you have access to your decryption key. In our testing we had zero issues with the install on our Windows 7 test machine. 1-2-3 and it was done. Once you install KineticSecure™ (their patented Continuous Backup™ serviceTM) is backing up your system whenever you’re online so you never have to worry about protecting your data. It doesn’t even slow down your computer, since it only backs up each change (after your initial backup of all files).

KineticD™ (Data Deposit Box) Secure Online Backup Testing

So we kicked the tires on a KineticD™ (Data Deposit Box) a FREE Trial account and overall we were very impressed with it ease of use and reliability. The Free trial account works for 14 days and there are no limits so you get to try out everything before you pay for anything. It appears that KineticD™ (Data Deposit Box) has adopted the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principal in their backup offerings like some others who occupy the small business market space. You won’t have all the bells and whistles of some of the other online backup services features, such as the Magic Briefcase from SugarSync, what you will see is the straight forward and easy to use major features, such as schdedule configuring your backup settings, file sharing capabilities, performance, support and ease of use which for a small to mid-sized business might have a significant impact on their backup decision.

Again from our testing, downloading the Admin lightweight Client software, iInstallation and setup of the software was simple and took just a few moments including KineticD™ (Data Deposit Box) Online Backup setting up and kicking off our first backup. The Admin client did offer a WYSIWYG style process for creating our first backup; it was simple and intuitive enough that we were easily able to easily figure it out.

Based on the amount of data we had set for our initial backup we fully expected it to take at least an hour or so for backup to be completed (not uncommon with many backup services). We were very pleasantly surprised that our backup took just a few minutes. Yes, that awesome feeling that your data will not only get to it’s backup resting place securely, but with KineticD™ (Data Deposit Box) Secure apparently it also gets there in an encrypted, compressed and expedited fashion. Just like the installation of the client software the backup occurred easily and flawlessly. After our backup we started tinkering around with the admin client. Backing up your information with KineticSecureD (Data Deposit Box) software is as simple as choosing the files and folders on your computer and clicking “Go”. It is worthy to mention that KineticD™ (Data Deposit Box) Secure does use windows plugins for backing up servers, open files, MS Outlook and database backup for open/running databases. This gives KineticD™ (Data Deposit Box) honors for those looking for a reliable business infrastructure backup solution.

Of course we are never done with our review until we try to get our data back and do a restore. With our test Admin client we were able to maneuver through the restore process and actually this was the best part of our testing. Just pick the folder where you want your restored data on your computer and wala bingo! KineticSecure™ packages your selection into a downloadable WebCart archive and your files are there ready to restore (although you will have to wait ait may take a short bit to access download them depending on size and your bandwidth). Nice, simple and quick. Successful restore, always a relieving feeling when you get your needed data back. As with PC Magazine we agree, this is one of the most complete online backup packages we’ve tested, but it could use a make-over of the interface. The interface is easy to use and navigate, but looks like a program from the 1990’s. With all your important data securely stored and continuously updated, KineticSecure™ lets you recover your files from anywhere. Whether it’s a lost file or one you simply need at an unexpected time, you can instantly restore a lost file or folders in a few short clicks.

KineticSecureD (Data Deposit Box) Online Backup Storage Pricing

Although it might appear pricy, you can add multiple machines to one account, which the competition charges extra for. The product’s emphasis on simplicity continues with pricing: $2 per gigabyte per month, and you can connect as many machines as you want. Yet in the case of this service, simplicity doesn’t mean skimping. It’s got most of what we look for in online backup services, including continuousal (rather than scheduled daily or hourly) backup, multiple machine support, versioning, archiving, secure folder sharing, and open-file backup. When you add in the Free KineticExtend service for secure remote desktop access to a Windows PC or server from any other PC, iPhone or iPad, it’s an effective and affordable replacement for expensive, complicated VPNs and storage hardware.

Support

Technical support is available via Internet online help, email or toll-free 800 number (although we had to search fairly extensively for it on their website). No fancy bells, whistles, or eye candy here. You’ll get nice easy backup, support, high-end security, and it just works.
