SugarSync Online Backup, Storage and Sharing

SugarSync Online Backup is definitely one of our favorites because it does it all; data online storage, backup, file sharing, mobile applications for access via your cell phone (Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, iPhone), remote multiple computer and file synchronization, unrestricted bandwidth and file size upload, and desktop clients for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

The basic utility of SugarSync is simple but powerful. You simply determine which files and folders you want to sync, and SugarSync does the remainder. The files are securely stored online, and you can easily remotely access the files on your other computers (PC and Mac), laptop, netbook, your smartphone, or any computer with a web browser. SugarSync also enables you to share your files with friends, coworkers, or whoever you want, and only who you want. SugarSync is a truly automatic online backup solution. You don’t have to constantly sync or manually upload your files, SugarSync does it all and runs continuously in the background. It even automatically syncs edits and changes you make from any computer. SugarSync also features drag-and-drop functionality within the program and the online manager. The only feature we would have liked to see that SugarSync was missing is an integrated file search (and we hear they’re working on it).

SugarSync Online Backup is amazingly uncomplicated to use. Even new users should have no challenge navigating the software and taking advantage of all the features. With a streamlined interface and straightforward navigation, it’s easy to sync, share, and store all or part of your files. And unlike some online storage solutions, SugarSync is equipped to easily and quickly restore your files (even previous versions or deleted files). Storing and accessing your documents online is certainly easier than continually emailing yourself, and you don’t have to worry about email file size restrictions. SugarSync is extremely effective for sharing files and making them accessible across multiple computers. In fact, it’s probably less complex to setup and maintain than a home network.Signup for SugarSync Online Backup

SugarSync is one of the newest services around, but has garnered some significant attention. Blogger Jayson Harshbarger at Hypercubed.Com tried the beta version of the service in May 2008 (report is somewhat outdated). For instance, the main reason he reluctantly decided to stick with Mozy was because SugarSync didn’t offer file versions at the time. SugarSync’s current policy is to keep the preceding five versions of a file, which can be valuable in some cases but falls short of Syncplicity’s unlimited versions policy. He also expressed some minor concerns about login security, which is a problem when accessing any account from a public computer that requires a username and password. OK with us though.

SugarSync is indeed a secure online data storage and sharing solution. During the transfer/sync process of uploading and downloading files, SugarSync utilizes SSL encryption. And while the files are being stored on secure servers, SugarSync keeps them protected with 128-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption. Furthermore, their servers are backed up redundantly in multiple data centers. Your account and personal access webpage are password protected. You can even require that others who you allow access to the documents via an emailed link have to input a special access code.

SugarSync offers a free 45-day no cost trial that includes 10 gigabytes (GB) of online storage. After the complimentary trial, the basic plan costs a mere $0.25 per GB per month. The maximum storage plan is 250 GB at a low cost of $0.09 per GB per month. Unlike most syncing services, a variety of plans are available, ranging from the 10 GB Starter Plan (*est. $2.50 per month or $25 per year) to the 250 GB Business Plan (*est. $25 per month or $250 per year). They also have an excellent support center that includes a dedicated knowledge base, FAQs, tutorials, troubleshooter, discussion forum, email, and support tickets.

SugarSync Online Backup Con’s

* A bit pricy compared to straight online storage
* Large files take a while to sync

Online Syncing services are in their early development and offer some desirable features if you work on the road a lot or use multiple computers on a daily basis. However, pricing and storage space can’t compete with traditional data online backup services. If syncing services are useful for you may want to consider using a gratis or starter plan from SugarSync for the most valuable files you need synced and an online backup service such as Mozy, BackBlaze or IDrive for serious data backup.

SugarSync Online Backup is a great way to warehouse, share, and mobilize your files and data. It really is a all-inclusive solution for internet storage, online file sharing/collaboration, and multiple computer syncing. With innovative features and mobile options, your files are automatically everywhere you could ever aspire them to be. For a unique combination of features, simplicity, and amazing flexibility, SugarSync is a tremendous service with remarkable value and utility.
