Overall Rating
ZumoDrive is an online data storage, sharing, and multi-device sync-like utility that comes with 1GB of no cost storage space. You can upgrade to 10GB or all the way up to 500GB for as little as $0.16 per GB per month. ZumoDrive does not have a bandwidth or max document size limit at this time. Drag-n-drop, photo albums, and mobile access through the iPhone (iPhone Data Storage) only are just a few of the rich number of features available to users. Tech support is provided through the community forum and by email only. This kind of service in itself, storage/synchronization, isn’t new by any means. Other services like DropBox have been providing data online backup and storage services for years.

We have reviewed plenty of file sync options here. ZumoDrive on the surface might seem like the other online storage options but comes with interesting differences. One of the main reasons we usually look for online storage is to keep our data, whether it be documents, pictures, or music files be accessible on various devices we use desktops, laptops, work computers, smart phones, Netbooks, etc. Copying and keeping generous amounts of data in sync is a humongous undertaking with ZumoDrive and we shouldn’t have to put any effort into it. After all, it’s 2009, isn’t it? It’s the file spoofing that makes the leap for ZumoDrive. The capability to ‘have’ 200gb of files accessible without actually storing them directly and fully in your device memory. |
How is ZumoDrive Different? Other options like the exceptional Dropbox works by syncing all your computers by copying the files across all devices over the network. This could mean a lot of network congestion if you add/delete a bunch of big files all the time, even though concealed to you. Zumo Drive differs here by funneling the data to the cloud, some server on the Internet. Now, you can see this data across all your computers/devices just as if it were on your local drive. And when you try to access the data in ZumoDrive, it is streamed over the Internet, to your device.
But, ZumoDive also takes into account for situations without an Internet connection. They use an intelligent algorith that records popular documents with local devices and keeps them local so they are never offline. Precisely like Dropbox, ZumoDrive also keeps tr
ack of revision history for documents so you can recover from deleted or old copies. Access all your music, photos, documents on any computers, netbooks, laptops & iPhone even when you are limited on disk space.
There’s issues with the entire cloud thing, certainly. Especially when you reside in an area where you are limited on bandwidth, and access from a mobile connection, even at 3g speeds, has its moments. We won’t be satisfied until we can pop open my device, find the movie in 3 seconds or less and have it begin playing in HD quality within 10 seconds. I think 10-15 seconds is a suitable amount of time to allow. Right now, what are the chances of this being successful? Limited.
Overall, for individuals with big fat internet lines, ZumoDrive is certainly opening some eyes for those who are proponents of cloud computing. We feel that it is a bit premature for these type of data online backup and storage services, but certainly there are great prospects ahead for the concept.
